  Originally, a boat + a pair of hands + a mark. The combination of elements suggest "raise a boat (or boat-shaped object) straight into the air" (the mark suggesting the raised object comes into sight of others). Raise straight up
adds power/energy to suggest "be superior to" in the sense of raise above. Be predominant and excel are associated meanings, with victory, win, and defeat (another) by extension.
adds words to suggest "place a sheet of paper atop an original document in order to trace/copy it" (that is, raise up words). Thus the meanings trace and copy.
adds horse to indicate a horse leaping in the air. Rise (of prices) is an abstract, associated meaning.
